AGAIN WE GO DOWN MEMORY LANE, THIS TIME WE FEATURE SHAMSHAD BEGUM:

      Shamshad Begum, The Legendary Singer
(Source: India Post S Asia Bureau, August 98)

Shamshad Begum, the nasal voiced legendary classical and playback singer of yesteryears died in Mumbai on August 10, 1998. She was nearly a 100 years old. Shamshad Begum was the mother of the silver screen heart-throb of the black-and-white era Naseem Bano and grandmother of heroine Saira Bano (wife of Dilip Kumar).

Most of her songs were memorable hits. Even the one rendered in 1960s for Kismat, after her retirement: “Kajra mohabbatwala ankhiyon mein aisa dala” composed by O.P. Nayyar, proved a superhit. Her duet with Kishore Kumar, “Meri neendon main tum, meri khwabon mein tum” from Naya Andaz (composed by Naushad), similarly, remains almost a touchstone of melodious romance.

Shamshad—reputed to be a stunningly beautiful woman in her youth – performed live, both on stage and the All India Radio (AIR) through her musical group The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company of Performing Arts, set up in Delhi. Her crystal clear voice caught the attention of sarang maestro Ustad Hussain Baksh-wale Saheb, who took her as his disciple.

Since Mumbai had already been acknowledged as the country’s film capital, Shamshad went there in the late 1930s to try her fortune.

She was immediately grabbed by master music directors like Naushad Ali, Ram Ganguly, S D Burman, O P Nayyar and Khemchand Prakash. Throughout her film singing career, she remained a particular favorite with Naushad and Nayyar who used her voice not only to its fullest range but to the maximum extent possible. Shamshad became a national rage between the 1940s and mid-1960s rendering songs in her nasal voice – which helped her carve her independent – and till date unchallenged – niche in the world of music.

She became a rage with songs like O, Lagi Lagi (Aaan) Dhadkar Mera Dil (Babul), Teri Mehfil Main Kismat Azma kar Hum Bhi Dekhange (Mughal-E-Azam), Chhau Main Rakha Virana (Deedar), Holi Aayi Re Kanhai (Mother India) – all hits for which music was directed by Naushad.

Similarly, she gave superhits for Nayyar like Kabhi Aar, Kabhi Paar (Aar Paar), Poochh Mera Kya Naam Re, Nadi Kinare Gaon Re (CID). Among other notable numbers she rendered were Saiyan Dilmain Aana Re, Aake Chhup Na Jana Re (Bahaar – S D Burman), Ai Dil Na Mujhe Yaad Dila (Saawan Aaya – Khemchand Prakash) and Kaahe Koyal Shor Machaye (Aaag – Ram Ganguly)

      SHAMSHAD BEGUM:

      Shamshad Begum
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shamshad Begum was an Indian singer who was one of the first playback singers in the film industry.

Shamshad Begum was born in Amritsar, Punjab. She was a big fan of K.L. Saigal and watched Devdas 14 times. She earned 15 rs per song and was awarded 5000 on the completion of the contract on jenaphone. She started her radio career on Peshawar Radio and did work on Lahore, Dehli etc. She made her debut on radio in Lahore on December 16, 1937 captivating the hearts of listeners with the enchanting depth of her voice. Shamshad, reputed to be a stunningly beautiful woman in her youth, performed live both on stage and the All India Radio (AIR) through her musical group The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company of Performing Arts, set up in Delhi. The then AIR Lahore helped her in entering the world of movies as frequent broadcasting of her songs, which induced music directors to use her voice for their films. Shamshad also recorded “naats” and devotional music for a couple of gramophone recording companies. Her crystal clear voice caught the attention of sarangi maestro Ustad Hussain Bakshwale Saheb, who took her as his disciple. Lahore-based composer Ghulam Haider used her voice skillfully in some of his earlier films like: Khazanchi (1941) and Khandaan (1942). When he shifted to Bombay in 1944, Shamshad went with him as a member of his team. She is credited with singing one of the first Westernised songs – Meri jaan…sunday ke sunday by C.Ramchandra. O.P.Nayyar describes her voice as that of a “temple bell” for its clarity of tone.

In 1944 when Mehboob Khan launched his historical venture Humayun, Master Ghulam Haider used her voice in the film. That was the time when Amirbai Karnatki was considered the number one playback singer in Bombay. With the introduction of Shamshad Begum in the film world of Bombay, contemporary composers almost fell over each other in booking her for recording of their songs leading to a prolific career until the mid-late 1950s. Music directors like C. Ramchandra, S.D. Burman and Naushad & O.P.Nayyar used her as their prime female vocalist in the early part of their careers. Shamshad became a national rage between the 1940s and the late 50s rendering songs with her nasal voice, which helped her carve her independent image – a voice different from her peers – Lata, Asha, Geeta etc. Around 1998 there was a rumour that she had died, but the singer is very much alive & resides in Mumbai as a recluse.

I was told that #8 in its days was really a big Hit; when this one came on, they would wind up the turntable, (phonograph) put in a new needle, and play about 4 or 5 times; during those days you have to handle the records with care, if it drops on the floor, it would shatter into pieces.
We have come a long way from those days:

Barsaat (1949) is a bollywood classic, is it because it is a very good film? it depends on the viewer.
Nargis is fantastic as Reshma, a woman who deals with a
variety of different situations extremely well whils’t Raj Kapoor, playing
Pran, did justice to the role, In all I would not refer to this film as a classic.

The music of this film is what I am concerned with, the songs are certainly Nostalgic, It is a treat to see Nargis perform some of the catchy tunes from this movie. Those were the days when movies had like about ten to twelve songs……….even if the movie were not that good…….the songs certainly compensates for the time spent.
Today we travel down memory lane and pull up the songs from 57 years ago, as I said before most of the folks on this bb will not even know or heard of these tunes……………..but it is great to listen to what songs sound like 57-60 years ago, is it not? This was when Lataji was a teenager, her voice was then like as sharp as ever,

      There is one more that features a lot of oldies, in that movie there was not one but two Yesteryear Queens.Madhubala and Geeta Bali;
It is a movie that I’ve enjoyed, no not a classic in my book per se, but one with songs that will hit a chord with you.
As with Barsaat which had like about 10-12 songs, this one also had about 10-12 songs, before we go to songs………………..lets see if any of our colleagues could guess this one:

Just as I figured, songs that are very old seldom drew attention as it should, so maybe we should

get some that were favourites in the 70’s and 80’s: Try to remember these, from a film that featured

      a lot of oldies:

Loverji, no effort at all, I know we have some bright kids on this
board, and maybe some time or the other, one or two might wonder to
know what hindi music were like some forty to fifty years ago, and this
is where “Down Memory Lane” comes in. To give a feel of the songs and
its singers, the orchestration of music of ages gone by, is the reason
to keep this thread going……….Members of this forum might be taken
up with studies and other chores but in due course, a browsing student
or member will eventually get to play a song or two just for curiosity.

Like for instance, one day I was listening to Lata Mangeshkar, in the
collections of Music, there were two songs that she sang in memory of
      the legends viz

      http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/yqI71hrwxd.As1NMvHdW/

      (1) “Soja Raajkumari Soja”……..originally done by KL Saigal, this one by Saigal is so soft so soothing

and so utterly beautiful that you listen with eyes closed each
time it plays. What can one say of a man whose singing style was
such that it required neither training nor orchestration?

      (2) “Piya Milan Ko Jana”…………originally done again by KL Saigal

Listening to these two songs prompted me to get to know all I can about KL Saigal:

Take your point, certain members needs Sharukh, Arjune R,. John Abraham, Kareena, instead of

Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh, Feroze, Hema Malini, Vijyanthimala..

I welcome your advise and comments.

Gosh……Loverji you are too sweet, don’t even know what a doctoral degree is, like to consider myself as a next door neighbour who loves discussion about a song or two, (Aamne Saamne) not an expert.

As for classical music, must admit that there are a few, that I considered much likeable, and some of these were done by my favourite classical singer Ustad Manna Dey: There are like a dozen or so, but one that I can listened to over and over again is from the Raj Kapoor’s film “Dil Hi Tu Hai”

      Suno sajna… papeehe ne…kahaa sabse… pukaar ke..

Sambhal jaao…chaman walo…ke aaaye din bahaaaar ke..

Saawan ke mast jhoole…yahi geet ga rahee hai

Ghadiya piya milan ki nazdeek aa rahee hai

      Nazdeek aa rahi hai

Hawao ne jo chede hai fasaane hai wo pyaar ke

Sambhal jaao chaman walo ki aaye din bahaaar ke

      (Suno sajna…suno sajna)

Dekho na aise dekho..marzhi hai kya tumhaari

Bechain kar na dena..tumko kasam hamaari tumko kasam hamaari

Hami dushman na ban jaaye kahee apne _______ ke (i dont know that one word).

Oh its a super song! Then ther is ‘O sajna…barkha bahaar aayi…ras ki phuhaaar layi akhiyo mein pyaar laayi, o… sajna’

Those are some of the semi classical that come to my mind right now…

‘Naam gum jaaye gaaa…chehra ye badal jaayega..meri aawaaz hi pehechaan hai…gar yaad rahe’

‘Akhiyo ke jharoko se…meine dekha jo saanwre’ (not semi classical jus ordinary melody, but super)

‘Mere naina saawan bhado phir bhi mera man pyaasa’

Tell me Abdoolji, do u follow Hindi well enough to enjoy the lyrics too?

      Naam gum jaaye gaa

Mere naina saawan bhado phir bhi mera man pyaasa’

Akhiyon ke jharoke se, beautiful songs, they all are,

Loverji I enjoyed listening to these songs; as these are my type of songs,

      you surely know your songs,

.I wonder why we do not hear from Hemlata anymore?

jab diip jale aanaa, jab shaam dhale aanaa, remember that one?

too is tarah se meree jindagee mein shaamil hain

jahaan bhee jaaoo ye lagataa hain teree mahafil hain

Understand a few words of Hindi/Urdu, can’t say that I know it well enough to get a true

grasp of its meaning, reason for translations, but if I like a certain song, would go all out to

      get the lyrics translated.

Hami dushman na ban jaaye kahee apne _______ ke (i dont know that one word).

Hami dushman na ban jaaye kahee apne qaraar ke

Oh yes…ever since school days i’v been a fan of ‘Akhiyo ke jharoko se meine dekha jo saawre’. It has got a strange melancholy touch. I guess that is what makes it so sweet. And the lyrics are great too…simple but good.

Akhiyo ke jharokon se Maine dekha jo saanwre, Tum door nazar aaye Badi door nazar aaye &nbsp

There is another song i love… especially lyrics wise…each line…each and every line is super…and Kishorji has sung it sooooooooo sweetly…

Pyaar diwaanaa hotaa hai, mastaanaa hotaa hain
Har khushee se, har gam se, begaanaa hotaa hain

Shamaa kahe parawaane se, pare chalaa jaa
Meree tarah jal jaayegaa, yahaa naheen aa
Wo naheen sunataa, us ko jal jaanaa hotaa hain

Rahe koee sau paradon me, chupe sharam se
Nazar ajee laakh churaye, koee sanam se
Aa hee jaataa hain jis pe, dil aanaa hotaa hain

Suno kisee shaayar ne ye, kahaa bahot khub
Manaa kare duniyaan lekin mere mehaboob
Wo chhalak jaataa hai, jo paimaanaa hotaa hain

Here is a super song by Manna Dey –

Hasne ki chaah ne itna mujhe rulaaya hai

Koi hamdard nahi dard mera saaya hai

Dil to uljhaa hi raha zindgee kee baaton mein

Saanse jaltee hai kabhee kabhee raaton mein

Kisee kee aahaten ye kaun muskuraaya hai

Koi hamdard nahi dard mera saaya hai

Sapne chalet hi rahe rooz nayi raahon se

Koyi phislaa hai abhi abhi baahon mein

Kisi kee aah par taaron ko pyaar aaya hai

Koi hamdard nahi dard mera saaya hai

After so many long years in the Bollywood Film Industries; today he is no longer with us:

Another giant in the Bollywood Film Industries Passes On.

      Mumbai, (IANS)

Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the Bollywood doyen who mesmerised millions with Hindi films like “Guddi”, “Anand” and “Chupke Chupke”, died here Sunday following renal failure and heart complications, his family said. He was 83.

For the recipient of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the end came at 4.40 p.m. at the Lilavati Hospital here. The immediate cause for the death was septicaemia and chest infection along with kidney failure, hospital officials said.

Born in Kolkata on Sep 30, 1922, Mukherjee, or Hrishida as he was popularly called, leaves behind three daughters and a son. His granddaughters Tapur and Tupur Chatterjee are well-known models.

Mukherjee’s funeral is likely to be held Monday or Tuesday on the return of his son from the US.

The man who adopted a cocktail of simplicity and warmth to tell some of the best family dramas Bollywood ever saw had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hospital with kidney failure and other ailments in early June.

He started his career as an assistant director to veteran Bimal Roy in 1951 and it took him six years to direct his first film “Musafir” (1957) with Dilip Kumar.

The film bombed at the box office but caught Raj Kapoor’s attention who recommended Mukherjee as the director for “Anari”. This film was a huge commercial success and there was no looking back for the director after that.

The prolific director, who passed away after a prolonged illness, had by the end of his career taught generations how to make life fun-filled without losing virtuosity.

His common-man theme caught the audience’s fancy and his tragic – “Anand” – as well as light – “Chupke Chupke” – and tragicomic touch – “Mili” – made celluloid history.

Sadly, after “Khoobsoorat” his career saw a downslide despite brave attempts to salvage it with “Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaatein” (1999), starring Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla.

Apart from filmmaking, he served as the chairman of National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

His directorial ventures include “Sadma” (1983), “Khubsoorat” (1980), “Gol Maal” (1979), “Chupke Chupke” (1975), “Mili” (1975), “Namak Haraam” (1973), “Abhimaan” (1973), “Bawarchi” (1972), “Guddi” (1971), “Anand” (1970), “Anupama” (1966), “Anari” (1959) and “Musafir” (1957).

Also the writer of the screenplay for some of these films, he is known to have shaped the careers of several top actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Rekha, Jaya Bachchan and Amol Palekar.

Incidentally, he passed away on the 30th death anniversary of playback singer Mukesh who sang the famous song “Kahin door jab din dhal jaye’ in “Anand”, the film that made Mukherjee a living legend in his lifetime.

The touching message in “Anand” – that people die only to live on in the hearts of their near and dear ones – holds true for the film’s maker, too. Mukherjee is made immortal by the memories and the many moments of matinee magic he has left behind.

“Anand” was such a super film:

Loverji, these are gems and classics, songs that immortalised Rafisaab, he has gone (as we all will someday) but he certainly has leave an indelible mark for fans throughout the world.

Others like Mohd Azeez, Vipin Sachdeva, Debashish Das Gupta, Bankin Pathak, Shabbir Kumar, and (likable) Sonu Nigam tried their best…………but then the Ustad is most notable…….Rafi will always be Rafi, we will always crave for his recordings.

Have these listed in the “Memories of Mohd Rafi” thread, with audio and translations for the enjoyment of all fans.

Oh he was a genious – Hrishikeshji. I’v seen his “Sadma” (1983), “Khubsoorat” (1980), “Gol Maal” (1979), “Chupke Chupke” (1975), “Mili” (1975), “Namak Haraam” (1973), “Abhimaan” (1973), “Bawarchi” (1972), “Guddi” (1971), “Anand” (1970), “Anupama” (1966), “Anari” (1959). And sadma, khubsoorat, golmaal, chupke chupke, mili, abhimaan, guddy and anand are beyond comparison. And i think Anupama has quite a few great songs too… Sadma is a remake. Original was in Tamil….(or is it the other way round???) Im not sure… As a matter of fact all his films have good songs…. Lekin Abhiman, Anand aur guddi ka to jawab nahi!!! Lovely songs!

A heart breaking one reflecting the parting of true loves

Whenever duets are being sung and listened to, this would certainly comes to mind; Lataji when she was a teenager, Mukesh very young, the movie was a mega hit during its days, “Barsaat” evoked so much memories whenever it is mentioned; the song even today could be regarded as hummable hit.
The soothing voices of Mukesh and Lataji enacted by Raj Kapoor and Nargis blended so superbly in this tune, it can be reffered to as one of the best duets ever. How can we not include this one in memory lane?

Aha, I could not agree with you more as we stayed with the concept and ignored the literal meanings, for example

chaahe dvaar hriday ke band karo
No matter if you close the doors to your heart

… worked well enough but someone later mentioned that he could follow most of the hindi but there were holes in his knowledge of the language which the translated text filled. Thus the question begs should we stay in step with the hindi text – try to translate in chunks so that literal meanings too become apparent. I guess I am a bit boring.

Personally I like the way that the text kept flowing and understandable rather than precise and trying to figure out….what really the lyricist wanted to say. To be precise it will be less understandable; to be flowing and continuous will be understandable but not not precise.Hence like you said, translations take away the beauty………totally agreed.

Sometimes we have to give in to people like “myself” that does not understand the language, and translation plays a great part in giving me that insight.

Loverji, in order to make millions understand some of the beauty of the romantical language hindi/urdu we must continue to keep the translation flowing and continous rather the precise to the text it is too badSad, but it is the only way to keep the language alive.Big Smile

I definately take your point that the trans take away the beauty of the songs.

Give the kids time, and you will not able to feed them enough old music, was at that stage once. No one could have mention to me K L Saigal, KC Dey, Pankaj Mallik, Shamshad Begum, Noor Jehan, Geeta Roy/Dutt, Hemant Kumar, so much more I cannot even remember.

It is a joy to discuss old song with someone as knowledgeable as you loverji.

1.Aayega aanewala (Mahal, 1949) music by Khemchand Prakash)

      http://www.channeldosti.com/oldies/Lata%20Hits/Aayega%20Ane%20Wala.mp3

This was the song that defined the beginning of the Mangeshkarian magic
and transformed Madhubala into an instant living legend. Ironically,
Madhubala didn't lip-sync it on screen at all ! It was played in the
background. But what an impact it made ! With one song Lataji wiped
away all the careers of existing female singers. Ashok Kumar who played
the lead in Mahal still recalls how everyone in the room reacted when
the then- unknown Lata was asked to sing. Even today mention of Aaayega
aanewala lights up Lataji's eyes. “It's hundred percent my
favourite. I had done a number of rehearsals for the song. Actually the
composer Khemchand Prakash heard me singing for Anil Biswas. A number
of tunes were readied for Aayega aanewala. I was given strict
instructions about the importance of the song.
      The producer Ashok
Kumar and the director Kamal Amrohi told me I had to sing as though the
heroine was approaching from a distance. Since the studio was very
large, I was placed in one corner of the room and told to gradually
approach the microphone in the middle of the room while singing. There
were no dubbing and editing devices in those days. We had to do it all
in one go. I still remember we recorded the entire day.”

image of Madhubala dancing in a thousand images reflected on the walls
of the “Sheesh Mahal” set is as alive today as it was in the 60s. The
lyric by Shakeel Badayuni has acquired the hue of an emblem
accentuating rebellious love. It was composed by Naushad who suggested
the key line Pyar kiya koi chori nahi ki to Badayuni. The line became
the highlight of the song. Naushad feels Lataji gave her best to
      Mughal-e-Azam.
Listen to Lataji sing Pyar kiya to darna kya and
you'll know why the composing genius Sajjad Hussain once exclaimed,
“Lata sings, the others weep before the microphone.”

      3. Aaja re pardesi (Madhumati, 1957) music by Salil Chowdhury)

      http://www.channeldosti.com/oldies/Lata%20Hits/Aaja%20Re%20Pardesi.mp3

      Salil
Chowdhury is one of her absolute favourite composers. “I love all the
songs of Madhumati,” the Nightingale confesses excitedly, and
blushingly remembers how happy everyone was on the day Aaja re pardesi
was recorded. “Lyricist Shailendra gave me flowers. The director Bimal
Roy came forward to congratulate me. The song was beautiful and it was
such a big hit too.” The song won Lataji her first Filmfare award.

Some of these song will be featured in “LATA MANGESHKAR ACCOMPANIES US DOWN MEMORY LANE: VOLUME 2”

      4. Kahin deep jale kahin dil (Bees Saal Baad, 1962) music by Hemant Kumar)

      http://www.channeldosti.com/oldies/Lata%20Hits/Kahin%20Deep%20Jale.mp3

      Prior
to this song, Lataji had fallen seriously ill. Doctors had predicted
that she'd never be able to sing again. Being a born fighter, the
Nightingale swore to bounce back. Her first recording after her illness
was this high-pitched number of haunting Dimensions. Lataji was nervous
and apprehensive. “Fortunately the recording went off very well. Hemant
Kumar was of a very quiet temperament. He knew exactly what to compose
for me.” Interestingly Hemant Kumar recorded Lataji's voice during the
rehearsal and okayed it as the final take, the Nightingale says she's
glad she made a comeback after her illness with an intricate song like
Kahin deep jale. She had a point to prove to her detractors who were
waiting for her downfalls and she proved it. The song won her another
      Filmfare award.

abdool you rock, i am from this generation, but the oldies are the best, they have meaningfull lyrics, and the voice of the singer, every body that time has to sing form the heart, as there was no music or technology that time to hide the “besurapan” of the artiest, now days its technology, cut recording etc to help them.

songs these are forgot in a year or two because there is no melody, you go to disco and listen them and forget them, there are remixes which are more hit then current generation song .
even i am flaming the debate but its true no current generation singer can sing without cut recording, thats why even in stage shows they are lip syncing. they need breaks in songs, in yesteryears they sang with all the orchestra live even if its OP NAYERS famous horse tapping sequences.

      agin ABDUL you ROCK.
