Barsaat (1949) is a bollywood classic, is it because it is a very good film? it depends on the viewer.
Nargis is fantastic as Reshma, a woman who deals with a
variety of different situations extremely well whils’t Raj Kapoor, playing
Pran, did justice to the role, In all I would not refer to this film as a classic.

The music of this film is what I am concerned with, the songs are certainly Nostalgic, It is a treat to see Nargis perform some of the catchy tunes from this movie. Those were the days when movies had like about ten to twelve songs……….even if the movie were not that good…….the songs certainly compensates for the time spent.
Today we travel down memory lane and pull up the songs from 57 years ago, as I said before most of the folks on this bb will not even know or heard of these tunes……………..but it is great to listen to what songs sound like 57-60 years ago, is it not? This was when Lataji was a teenager, her voice was then like as sharp as ever,

    SHAMSHAD BEGUM:

    Shamshad Begum
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shamshad Begum was an Indian singer who was one of the first playback singers in the film industry.

Shamshad Begum was born in Amritsar, Punjab. She was a big fan of K.L. Saigal and watched Devdas 14 times. She earned 15 rs per song and was awarded 5000 on the completion of the contract on jenaphone. She started her radio career on Peshawar Radio and did work on Lahore, Dehli etc. She made her debut on radio in Lahore on December 16, 1937 captivating the hearts of listeners with the enchanting depth of her voice. Shamshad, reputed to be a stunningly beautiful woman in her youth, performed live both on stage and the All India Radio (AIR) through her musical group The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company of Performing Arts, set up in Delhi. The then AIR Lahore helped her in entering the world of movies as frequent broadcasting of her songs, which induced music directors to use her voice for their films. Shamshad also recorded “naats” and devotional music for a couple of gramophone recording companies. Her crystal clear voice caught the attention of sarangi maestro Ustad Hussain Bakshwale Saheb, who took her as his disciple. Lahore-based composer Ghulam Haider used her voice skillfully in some of his earlier films like: Khazanchi (1941) and Khandaan (1942). When he shifted to Bombay in 1944, Shamshad went with him as a member of his team. She is credited with singing one of the first Westernised songs – Meri jaan…sunday ke sunday by C.Ramchandra. O.P.Nayyar describes her voice as that of a “temple bell” for its clarity of tone.

In 1944 when Mehboob Khan launched his historical venture Humayun, Master Ghulam Haider used her voice in the film. That was the time when Amirbai Karnatki was considered the number one playback singer in Bombay. With the introduction of Shamshad Begum in the film world of Bombay, contemporary composers almost fell over each other in booking her for recording of their songs leading to a prolific career until the mid-late 1950s. Music directors like C. Ramchandra, S.D. Burman and Naushad & O.P.Nayyar used her as their prime female vocalist in the early part of their careers. Shamshad became a national rage between the 1940s and the late 50s rendering songs with her nasal voice, which helped her carve her independent image – a voice different from her peers – Lata, Asha, Geeta etc. Around 1998 there was a rumour that she had died, but the singer is very much alive & resides in Mumbai as a recluse.

AGAIN WE GO DOWN MEMORY LANE, THIS TIME WE FEATURE SHAMSHAD BEGUM:

    Shamshad Begum, The Legendary Singer
(Source: India Post S Asia Bureau, August 98)

Shamshad Begum, the nasal voiced legendary classical and playback singer of yesteryears died in Mumbai on August 10, 1998. She was nearly a 100 years old. Shamshad Begum was the mother of the silver screen heart-throb of the black-and-white era Naseem Bano and grandmother of heroine Saira Bano (wife of Dilip Kumar).

Most of her songs were memorable hits. Even the one rendered in 1960s for Kismat, after her retirement: “Kajra mohabbatwala ankhiyon mein aisa dala” composed by O.P. Nayyar, proved a superhit. Her duet with Kishore Kumar, “Meri neendon main tum, meri khwabon mein tum” from Naya Andaz (composed by Naushad), similarly, remains almost a touchstone of melodious romance.

Shamshad—reputed to be a stunningly beautiful woman in her youth – performed live, both on stage and the All India Radio (AIR) through her musical group The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company of Performing Arts, set up in Delhi. Her crystal clear voice caught the attention of sarang maestro Ustad Hussain Baksh-wale Saheb, who took her as his disciple.

Since Mumbai had already been acknowledged as the country’s film capital, Shamshad went there in the late 1930s to try her fortune.

She was immediately grabbed by master music directors like Naushad Ali, Ram Ganguly, S D Burman, O P Nayyar and Khemchand Prakash. Throughout her film singing career, she remained a particular favorite with Naushad and Nayyar who used her voice not only to its fullest range but to the maximum extent possible. Shamshad became a national rage between the 1940s and mid-1960s rendering songs in her nasal voice – which helped her carve her independent – and till date unchallenged – niche in the world of music.

She became a rage with songs like O, Lagi Lagi (Aaan) Dhadkar Mera Dil (Babul), Teri Mehfil Main Kismat Azma kar Hum Bhi Dekhange (Mughal-E-Azam), Chhau Main Rakha Virana (Deedar), Holi Aayi Re Kanhai (Mother India) – all hits for which music was directed by Naushad.

Similarly, she gave superhits for Nayyar like Kabhi Aar, Kabhi Paar (Aar Paar), Poochh Mera Kya Naam Re, Nadi Kinare Gaon Re (CID). Among other notable numbers she rendered were Saiyan Dilmain Aana Re, Aake Chhup Na Jana Re (Bahaar – S D Burman), Ai Dil Na Mujhe Yaad Dila (Saawan Aaya – Khemchand Prakash) and Kaahe Koyal Shor Machaye (Aaag – Ram Ganguly)

Meri bheegi bheegi si palko pe rah gaye, jaise mere sapne bikharke….Jale man tera bhi kisi ke milan ko anaamika tu bhi tarse….(angry song)

Ye shaam mastaani…madhosh kiye jaay. Mujhe door koi kheeche teri or liye jaay.(romantic)

Kya se kya ho gaya bewafa…tere pyaar mein! Chaha kya… kya mila..bewafa…(sad *** angry)

Ghunghuroo ki tarha…bajta hi raha hoo mein…kabhi is pag mein kabhi us pag mein bandhta hi rahaa hu mein…(Sad)

Jane kaha mera jigar gaya ji? Abhi abhi yahi tha kidhar gaya ji? (happy and cute)

Koi jab tumhaara hriday tod de tadapta hua jab koi chod de…tab tum mere pas aana priye…mera dil khula hai khula hi rahega tumhare liye…(sad)

Kabhi na kabhi, kahi na kahi, koi na koi to aayega. Apna mujhe banayega….(sad)

I cud just go on and on…..

Loverofmusic, I can relate to some of these songs, a couple can be regarded as favs of mine, that is

    (1) Meri bheegi bheegi si palko pe rah gaye
    (2) Ye shaam mastaani…madhosh kiye jaay
    (3) Kya se kya ho gaya bewafa.
    (4) Ghunghuroo ki tarha…bajta hi raha hoo mein
    (5) Jane kaha mera jigar gaya ji
    (6) Koi jab tumhaara hriday tod de *only Mukeshji could have sung this one with so much emotion

I played the harmoonium, mandolin, grapple with guitar a little bit, but the gift of a singing voice never came my way, as a matter of fact if you listen to me you will pelt me with anything nearby.

A couple years ago there was this movie “Dil Vil Pyar Pyar” if you can get the dvd to listen to, there are some nostalgic oldies.

So Loverofmusic do you sing like in a group/band

I am so sorry Loverof music, when you mentioned Bhupinder Singh, I was thinking of someone else,
‘Beete na bitaayi raina birha ki jaai raina…bheegi *** akhiyo mein raat na aayi raina…”Bhupinder”
This song sounds very familiar, can not give an opinion on Bhupinder, as I have not listened to many of his filmi songs………but I did listen to some of his Ghazals Selections with his wife Mitali, and I think that Mitali sings really beautifully, will listen again to “Tauba Tauba”

Could you why he stopped singing in hindi films?

    YESUDAS

    Hi LoverofMusic,

It is very difficult to give an honest opinion on Yesudas, his numbers
on hindi songs (filmi type) are not that lenthy, hard as I might try I
can only think of about a dozen or even less.

I remember that when he started out in the playback singing field, he
was very good, his music were tops, “Trishul” had like about two songs,
then there was “Saawan Ko Aane Do” with about four top hits songs,
“Chitchor” has one, and then “Saajan Bina Suhagan” another; I really
cannot remember of any other movies with “Hit Songs”

He received the Padmashri from thePresident of India in 1977. He
received the first National Award in 1977 for singing in the film
Achanum Bappayum, his second National Award for the film Gayathri, the
third National Award in 1978 for film Chitchor, the fourth National
Award for the Telugu f ilm Mega sandesham, his fifth National Award for
the flm Unnikale Oru Katha Parayaam, and his sixth in 1992 for the film
Bharatham. In all he is basking in about seven National Awards.

He is unequal in his capacity for songs of Classical type………he is a master in this type of singing,

ofcourse this is where he had really proven himself, with his ability
to master and sing in the many languages of India………in as much as
it is said that he had recorded so far between 20,000 – 25,000 songs.
Too bad that I am not too fond of the Classical Type of Songs.

All in all Yesu Ahimsa released recently along with Ricardo Banrrantes, brings talents
from the East and West under one roof, with an aim of spreading the
message of global peace and harmony.

Could we put him in the class of SP Balasubramaniam?

Yeh Tera Noor Yeh Tere Jalwe
    your splendour, your lustre,
Jis Tarah Chand Ho Sitaaron Mein..
as the moon amidst the glowing stars,

    Husn Wale Tera Jawaab Nahin…
    Possessor of beauty, you’re unequalled,

Teri Aankhon Mein Aisi Masti Hai
your eyes possess such a glitter,
    Jaise Chalke Huve Hon Paimaane
    like the spilled goblets,
Tere Honton pe woh Khumoshi Hai
your lips hold such a silence,
    Jaise Bikhre Huve Hon Afsane
    like many tales are scattered,
Teri Zulfon Ki Aise Rangath Hai
locks of your hairs have such form,
    Jaise Kaali Ghata Baharon Mein
like dark clouds in the sky,

    Husn Wale Tera Jawaab Nahin..
Oh possessor of beauty, you’re unequalled,

    Teri Surat Jo Dekhle Shair
if a Poet beholds your visage,
Apne Sheron Mein Taazagi Bhara Le
    his poems will get rejuvenated,
Ik Musaphir Jo Tujh Ko Paa Jaaye
if a traveller gets you on his side,
Apne Khwabon Mein Zindagi Bhar Le
his dreams will get a life,
    Nagmagar Dundle Agar Tujh Ko
    if tuner/musician procure you once,
Dard Bharle Woh Dil Ke Taaron Mein..
he will have the feel in the cords of his heart,

    Husn Wale Tera Jawaab Nahin
    Possessor of beauty, you’re unequalled,
Koyi Tujh Sa Nahin Hazaaron Mein
    in the thousands, you’re matchless,
    Husn Wale Tera Jawaab Nahin
    Possessor of beauty, you’re unequalled,

Tuu Hindu Banega Na Musalaman Banegaa
You will neither be a Hindu nor a Muslim
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human
Tuu Hindu Banega Na Musalaman Banegaa
You will neither be a Hindu nor a Muslim
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man, you will be a human

(Achha Hai Abhi Tak Tera Kuch Naam Nahin Hai,
Tujko Kisi Mazhab Se Koi Kaam Nahin Hai,)2
Good, you have no name till now
    nor bothered with any religion

Jis Ilm Ne Insaan Ko Taqseem Kiya Hai,
Us Ilm Ka Tujh Par Koi Ilzaam Nahin Hai,
The knowledge which has made man defrenciates
amongs’t themselves, You know nothing about it

Tu Badle Huve Waqt Ki Pehechaan Banega,
You will be a symbol of changing times
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human
Tuu Hindu Banega Na Musalaman Banegaa
You will neither be a Hindu nor a Muslim
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human

(Maalik Ne Har Insaan Ko Insaan Banaya,
Hamne Use Hindu Ya Musalmaan Banaya,)2
God created man as a Human being
but we make him a Hindu or a Muslim

Kudrat Ne Tho Bakshi Thi Hamen Ek Hi Dharti,
Hamne Kahin Bharat Kahin Iran Banaya,
Mother Nature gave us one earth
We divided into parts of Iran and India etc

Jo Thod De Har Band Voh Toofan Banega,
You will be that tempest that shall break all barriers
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human
Tuu Hindu Banega Na Musalaman Banegaa
You will neither be a Hindu nor a Muslim
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human

(Nafrat Jo Sikhaye Voh Dharam Tera Nahin Hai,
Insaan Ko Jo Rondhe Voh Kadam Tera Nahin Hai,)2
Its not your choice to hate
nor your choice to trample people

Quraan Na Ho Jismen Voh Mandir Nahin Tera,
Geeta Na Ho Jismen Voh Haram Tera Nahin Hai,
It is not your temple that does not keep the Quran
and that which does not have the Geeta

Tu Amn Ka Aur Sulah Ka Armaan Banega,
You will be a hope to the two faiths
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human
Tuu Hindu Banega Na Musalaman Banegaa
You will neither be a Hindu nor a Muslim
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human

(Yeh Deen Ke Taaj ur Yeh Watan Bechne Wale,
    Yeh Watan Bechne Wale,
Yeh Deen Ke Taaj Aur Yeh Watan Bechne Wale,
Those who turn traitors and sell their own country
Insaanon Ke Laashon Ke Kafan Bechne Wale,
    Kafan Bechne Wale,
Insaanon Ke Laashon Ke Kafan Bechne Wale,
Those who sells human bondage and relations
Yeh Mehelon Mein Baite Huve Qatil Yeh Lutere,
These looters and killers sits in palatial Mansions
Kaanton Ke Hi Vajru Hein, Chaman Bechne Wale (2),
Who sells their virtues for vices

Tu Inke Liye Maut Ka Ailaan Banega,
You will be their nemesis one day
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human
Tuu Hindu Banega Na Musalaman Banegaa
You will neither be a Hindu nor a Muslim
Insaan Ki Aulad Hai Insaan Banega
You are the son of man you will be a human

akelaa hoon main, is duniyaa mein
I’m all alone in this world,
koee saathee hai, to meraa saayaa
if there is any friend to me, then its my Shadow,

I’m all alone in this world,
koee saathee hai, to meraa saayaa
if there is any friend to me, then its my Shadow,

na to parawaanaa, aaur naa diwaanaa, main kisee mahafil kaa
I’m neither a lover nor a lunatic, of any congregration,
soonee soonee raahen thaamatee hain baahen, gham kise manzil kaa
as these lonely paths make hold of me, who has the grief of destination now,
na to parawaanaa, aaur naa diwaanaa, main kisee mahafil kaa
I’m neither a lover nor a lunatic, of any congregration,
soonee soonee raahen thaamatee hain baahen, gham kise manzil kaa

mai to hoon, raahee dil kaa
    I’m the traveller of Heart,
    saathee hai, to meraa saayaa
if there is any friend to me, then its my Shadow,
    akelaa hoon main
    I’m all alone

jaise kabhee pyaare, jheel ke kinaare, hans akelaa nikale
like a lonely Swan, at the banks of the lovely lake,
waise hee dekho jee, ye manamaujee, maujon ke seenen pe chale
see, these vagabonds, are travelling on the chests of waves,
jaise kabhee pyaare, jheel ke kinaare, hans akelaa nikale
like a lonely Swan, at the banks of the lovely lake,
waise hee dekho jee, ye manamaujee, maujon ke seenen pe chale
see, these vagabonds, are travelling on the chests of waves,
    chaand sitaaron ke tale
under the light of monn and stars,
    saathee hai, to meraa saayaa
if there is any friend to me, then its my Shadow,
    akelaa hoon main
