Can’t remember seeing this movie, but if I have to guess, my answer will be Coffee House? Don’t know, as your description fits this movie.

BTW Abdoolji, Im already in that thanking stage…Im thankful to Dad that he had pushed me in the right direction…otherwise i wudnt have reached wher i have today.

Im not a student, Abdoolji, Im working. I know u must be younger to me…my special respect (for suddenly adding a ‘ji’ to ur name) shows my deep respect to your knowledge of musicSmile.

Loverji, a lesson to the now generation “listening to parents” is quite important and should be a part of everyday’s education. Too bad that when kids are away from parental sights, things can go haywire. But I guess that trusts and parental guidance plays a great part in the way kids are moulded.

You are a working person just like me, I do not know if I am younger or older than you, but there is mutual respects………thats what counts.

Oh yes…but then that was a long time ago….. Now the competitions amongst kids are sooooo tough! Ther are so may talented children…Now i go for judging once in a while! God! Its a tough job!

So Loverji, going back to your past, what was your favourite song, did you sing for a large gathering? Did you enter other competitions, I guess it was really tough, with so many wanted to emulate Lata Mangeshkar.

Loverji, with your wealth of info on this thread; today you have become the “owner”

so to keep this going and continue to share your knowledge with us, you are given the mantle

and mandate to keep it going……………..please bring in some other friends so that we may

share their opinions on the very old, old and not so old songs of days gone by.

Yes. Actually the translation sounds funny…(no offence meant to the great person who took the effort to translate). It is just that most of the songs(lyrics) are super only in its original lang…translation makes them ( if not funny) loose their naturalness (swaabhavikta).

I sang this song for a competitions in school…LOL. The rule was that we shud sing either patriotic or devotional song…just becos this one had the word ‘girdhar’ i took it as a devotional song Big Smileand sang it.

So Loverji, did you won the competition?Big Smile

    How about these songs-

‘Naa jiya laage na…tere bina piya kahi jiyaa lage naa…’

‘Naam gum jaaye gaaa…chehra ye badal jaayega..meri aawaaz hi pehechaan hai…gar yaad rahe’

‘Akhiyo ke jharoko se…meine dekha jo saanwre’ (not semi classical jus ordinary melody, but super)

‘Mere naina saawan bhado phir bhi mera man pyaasa’

Tell me Abdoolji, do u follow Hindi well enough to enjoy the lyrics too?

Akhiyon ke jharoke se, beautiful songs, they all are,

Loverji I enjoyed listening to these songs; as these are my type of songs,

    you surely know your songs,

.I wonder why we do not hear from Hemlata anymore?

too is tarah se meree jindagee mein shaamil hain

Understand a few words of Hindi/Urdu, can’t say that I know it well enough to get a true

grasp of its meaning, reason for translations, but if I like a certain song, would go all out to

    get the lyrics translated.

Wow wow wow! U have given almost a complete biodata of Yesudas!!! Im amazed!!!!

Well the song ‘beete na bitayi raina’ is from the film parichay staring Jitendra and Jaya. It has got lots of songs…there is another semi classical piece by Bhupinder alone. The film is actually an Indianised adaptation of ‘Sound of music’. ‘Beete na bitaayi is a duet by Latha and Bhupinder.

As for why they (Bhupinder and Yesudas) left Hindi film music field…. I think the Hindi belt is not that keen on non Hindi speaking singers…Yesudas is from South India and Bhupinder is from the North East…Bhupinder’s accent etc is excellent, perfect. But as far as yesudas is concerned, tho he has put up a good effort, its rather funny. But his singing talents are just unmatchable!

So u r not a cla$sical music fan! Well, 2day morning on the way to office i was listening to a Rafi collection… what is ur opinion of ‘Madhuban mein radhika nache re…girdhar ki muraliya baaje re’… it is a semi classical number of Rafi saab.

Well, I was part of a troup once upon a time…when it interfered with my studies, Dad made me quit. Our whole family is crazy bout music. Its a family of ‘lovers of music’Smile.

How bout u? R u part of a music troop? U have to be a South Indian to know so much about Yesudas….

Thats somemore I ‘ve learn’t about Yesudas and Bhupinder, I can understand Bhupinder’s being from the North, would speak perfect Hindi/Urdu and his language would seemed acceptable and as perfect flowing to the Northern Indian. What are the language of the Southern Indian? Do they still uses Sanscrit in India?…….reason for asking this, is recently I have listened to a song by Jagjit Singh, a bhajan titled “Hey jag trata” and it blew my socks away. Could not understand the meaning. I think that certain sect of Brahmhin still uses Sanscrit.
Betay Na Beta ay Raina…………..Lata and Bhupinder, listend to recently after a long time, seems refreshing, but the one to hold my attention was this duet with Rafi and Bhupinder “Dharam Kanta”
    http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/5Jpm2Yo8ES.As1NMvHdW/

Guess your dad was perfectly right to make you quit to continue your studies, this should be the most important thing in your life right now………..there is always a time for singing, someday you are going to say “Thank You Dad”
Do not have the time to be in a group right now, have friends who encourages me, but I guess the interest is not there.

Will tell you about those light classical, and other classicals by Manna Dey later.

Gosh……Loverji you are too sweet, don’t even know what a doctoral degree is, like to consider myself as a next door neighbour who loves discussion about a song or two, (Aamne Saamne) not an expert.

As for classical music, must admit that there are a few, that I considered much likeable, and some of these were done by my favourite classical singer Ustad Manna Dey: There are like a dozen or so, but one that I can listened to over and over again is from the Raj Kapoor’s film “Dil Hi Tu Hai”

The best song ever made was one sung by an artiste some 50 years and over ago, it was a song that
bring tears to the eyes of hundreds of millions of Indians, including after hearing for the first time was
    Pandit Jawarharlall Nehru;
Occasion was the death of the Great Mahatma Gandhi…………with so many clues, you guess the song and the artiste: Smile
There are many great songs but to select the best would be an impossible task. Just an opinion.
    .

Abdool, now u know wht i meant when i said about kids of this forum! In spite of all the above clues i wonder if any of them wud understand which song u r talking about!!! And yes, it still brings tears to my eyes…especially the ‘jab tak thi saas lade wo….’ part…the emotion with which she sings is amazing!

Bapu ki ye Amar Kahani: Rafisaab

Ay Meri Watan ke logon: Lataji

Either would have been correct, the second in the early 60’s when
troops going to the Border; during the Chinese skirmishes Lata sang Ay
    meri watan ke logon
The First after Ghandiji was brutally gunned down in the late 40’s Rafi sang “suno suno ai duniya walo Bapu ki hai Amar Kahani”
The famous SP Balasubramaniam did a rendition of this and there is a debate unto today, of whose version is the best:

So many people were touched by these songs.

    Abdool, u r taking so much effort…but u
see, the kids here wudnt care to listen to such old numbers. They can
only relate to the Sonu Nigam/Adnan stuff.

As for me, Im doing this from office. Agreed that its lunch
interval…but still cant possibly listen to music!!! However i wud
love to…. So will try my level best to do so from home(extremely diff
to find the time tho). Songs from no.6(mere saamne wali) to 13(ye jo
mohabbat) are songs that i always listen to….and no.3(gum hai kisi ke
pyaar mein, din subah shaam) too…the others are not so familiar.

Loverji, no effort at all, I know we have some bright kids on this
board, and maybe some time or the other, one or two might wonder to
know what hindi music were like some forty to fifty years ago, and this
is where “Down Memory Lane” comes in. To give a feel of the songs and
its singers, the orchestration of music of ages gone by, is the reason
to keep this thread going……….Members of this forum might be taken
up with studies and other chores but in due course, a browsing student
or member will eventually get to play a song or two just for curiosity.

Like for instance, one day I was listening to Lata Mangeshkar, in the
collections of Music, there were two songs that she sang in memory of
    the legends viz

    http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/yqI71hrwxd.As1NMvHdW/

    http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/y4I7yDeoxS.As1NMvHdW/

    (1) “Soja Raajkumari Soja”……..originally done by KL Saigal, this one by Saigal is so soft so soothing

and so utterly beautiful that you listen with eyes closed each
time it plays. What can one say of a man whose singing style was
such that it required neither training nor orchestration?

    (2) “Piya Milan Ko Jana”…………originally done again by KL Saigal

Listening to these two songs prompted me to get to know all I can about KL Saigal:

Take your point, certain members needs Sharukh, Arjune R,. John Abraham, Kareena, instead of

Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh, Feroze, Hema Malini, Vijyanthimala..

I welcome your advise and comments.

    There is one more that features a lot of oldies, in that movie there was not one but two Yesteryear Queens.Madhubala and Geeta Bali;
It is a movie that I’ve enjoyed, no not a classic in my book per se, but one with songs that will hit a chord with you.
As with Barsaat which had like about 10-12 songs, this one also had about 10-12 songs, before we go to songs………………..lets see if any of our colleagues could guess this one:
