    Chand Sirfarish (Fanaa)

    Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah
    Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah
    Lord be praised!

Chand Sifarish Jo Karta Humaari Deta Woh Tumko Bataa
the moon, while giving us its blessings tells you that…..
Sharmo Haya Ke Parde Giraake Karni Hai Humko Khata
we have to drop the veil of modesty and transgress
Zid Hai Ab To Khudh Ko Mitaana Hona Hai Tujh Mein Fanaa
now I’m determined to obliterate myself and get destroyed (in your love)

Chand Sifarish Jo Karta Humaari Deta Woh Tumko Bataa
Sharmo Haya Ke Parde Giraake Karni Hai Humko Khata

Teri Ada Bhi Hai Jhonke Wali Chu Ke Guzar Jaane De
your charm is like a breeze which touches me and p***es
Teri Lachak Hai Ke Jaise Daali Dil Mein Uthar Jaane De
you’re as supple as a young branch, which moves me no end
Aaja Baahon Mein Kar Ke Bahaana Hona Hai Tujh Mein Fanaa
find some reason to come into my arms, let me get destroyed (in your love)

Chand Sifarish Jo Karta Humaari Deta Woh Tumko Bataa
Sharmo Haya Ke Parde Giraake Karni Hai Humko Khata[?]

    Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah
    Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah Subahnallah

Hai Jo Iraade Bataa Doon Tumko Sharma Hi Jaaogi Tum
if I tell you my intentions it’ll make you bashful
Dhadkanein Jo Suna Doon Tumko Gabrah Hi Jaaogi Tum
if I let you hear my hearbeats it’ll scare you (with it’s intensity)
Humko Aata Nahin Hai Chupaana Hona Hai Tujh Mein Fanaa
I can’t hide my feelings, let me get destroyed (in your love)

Chand Sifarish Jo Karta Humaari Deta Woh Tumko Bataa
Sharmo Haya Ke Parde Giraake Karni Hai Humko Khata
Zid Hai Ab To Khudh Ko Mitaana Hona Hai Tujh Mein Fanaa

chhod gaye baalam mujhe haai akela chod ga
my beloved has deserted me, woe, left me all alone

A heart breaking one reflecting the parting of true loves

Whenever duets are being sung and listened to, this would certainly comes to mind; Lataji when she was a teenager, Mukesh very young, the movie was a mega hit during its days, “Barsaat” evoked so much memories whenever it is mentioned; the song even today could be regarded as hummable hit.
The soothing voices of Mukesh and Lataji enacted by Raj Kapoor and Nargis blended so superbly in this tune, it can be reffered to as one of the best duets ever. How can we not include this one in memory lane?

It happened at the height of the Rajesh Khanna wave — in the after-1970 Aradhana glow when Mohammed Rafi’s confidence was at its lowest ebb. The Mohammed Rafi who had sung, for Naushad, a total of 149 songs (81 of them solo) through 35 years. That ace composer had heard about how sheer nonentities, in the recording room, had begun dictating to Mohammad Rafi.

During a small-time composer’s Rafi recording, therefore, Naushad quietly slipped into the sound recordist’s booth at Mehboob Studios in the Bandra suburb of Bombay. As he sat through the recording, Naushad felt aghast to find striplings, in the recording room, telling a stalwart like Rafi how to sing.

Whereupon Naushad discreetly moved out, leaving word that his pet performer should call on him, without fail, at his Ashiana Bandra home — on the singer’s way back to Rafi Villa after the recording.

As Rafi entered his mentor-composer’s home, Naushad first took him severely to task. The burden of the Naushad song — “Who are these people to tell Mohammed Rafi what to do? Isn’t Rafi too trained a performer to submit to anyone but the song composer?”

Having heard out his benefactor, Rafi explained to Naushad in detail how, through three years, they had sapped his will to perform — as his own man. Naushad’s counter to that — “Never ever forget that you are Mohammed Rafi, a performer whose seasoning, by now, far exceeds that of any male singer in the industry. Always remember, Rafi that the singer you identify as your rival, now, has no classical background at all. So how possibly could he be competition to you, Rafi? Go back, confident like before, to the recording room. Just sing like my Rafi always did.”

Having said that, having identified Kishore Kumar as no classical competition to Rafi, Naushad instinctively realised that something more tangible had to be done to restore to Rafi his known niche in our song lexicon.

To this end, Naushad hurried with a recording due for My Friend (1974) and summoned Rafi, for a song-rehearsal, for that film. For a solo cast in the Naushadian Bhairavi mould. As Naushad thus put Rafi through his performing paces afresh, for the My Friend Bhairavi classic going as Naiyaa Meree Chaltee Jaaye Sahare Tere Badhte Jaaye, Rafi instinctively regained performing poise.

Almost concurrent with that happening came the Film World magazine awards and Rafi, here, was very much in the running for the Best Singer citation. Bombay’s Shanmukhananda Hall was jampacked that serene evening as it came to be announced that Mohammed Rafi had been voted Best Singer for his empathetic rendition of Teree Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Qadam Aaj Ke Baad — as written by Saawan Kumar and tuned by Usha Khanna to go on Anil Dhawan in Hawas. The moment — to the backdrop of the Teree Galiyon Mein number playing — Mohammed Rafi was pronounced the winner, this singer, in walking up to the stage, was a man metamorphosed.

All of Rafi’s shaken singing confidence thus returned in one stroke — it was his first award in years. The same Mohammed Rafi who had made it a habit of bagging the prestigious Filmfare Best Male Singer award every other year

(Tu is tarah se meree zindagee mein shaamil hain)2
you are mingled in my life in such a harmonious way,
jahaan bhee jaaoo ye lagataa hain teree mahafil hain
wherever I go, it seems that only your presence is everywhere,
Tu is tarah se meree zindagee mein shaamil hain
you are mingled in my life in such a harmonious way,

(ye aasamaan ye baadal ye raasate ye hawaa)2
this wide sky, this dark cloud, these paths, this breeze,
har yek cheez hain apanee jagah thhikaane se
everything is at their respective states, well coordinated
kaee dinon se shikaayat naheen zamaane se
there is no lamentations towards the world nowadays,
ye zindagee hain safar, too safar kee manjil hain
life is a journey, and you’re the destination of this journey,

jahaan bhee jaaoo ye lagataa hain teree mahafil hain

Tu is tarah se meree zindagee mein shaamil hain
you are mingled in my life in such a harmonious way,

(tere baghair jahaan mein koyee kamee see thee)2
without you, there was a certain hollow absence in this world,
bhatak rahee thee jawaanee andheree raahon mein
my youth was wandering in the benighted dark paths,
sukoon dil ko milaa, aake teree baahon mein
after coming to your embrace, I’ve procured restness for my heart,
main ik khoyee huyee mauj hoo, too saahil hain
I’m nothing but a lost tide, and you’re the ocean,

jahaan bhee jaaoo ye lagataa hain teree mahafil hain
wherever I go, it seems that only your presence is everywhere,
Tu is tarah se meree zindagee mein shaamil hain
you are mingled in my life in such a harmonious way,

(tere jamaal se roshan hain ka ay naat meree)2
my whole world is shining with your beauty,
meree talaash teree dilakashee rahe baakee
may my search, your enticement , be there forever,
khudaa kare ke ye diwaanagee rahe baakee
may it be God’s will, that my madness be there forever,
teree wafaa hee meree har khushee kaa hasil hain
your fidelity is the source of my each and every happiness,

jahaan bhee jaaoo ye lagataa hain teree mahafil hain
wherever I go, it seems that only your presence is everywhere,

Purnima, the lyrics are that of the Lata Mangeshkar version, if this is translated into english, will be just as well as good; cannot seems to find the lyrics of the Muskeh’s version, of which I really need.
Did not realise this, until you indirectly pointed it out; still trying for the Mukesh ‘s version.

Ab Kya Misaal Doon Maein Tumhare Shabaab Ki
[Now how do I describe your youthful beauty]
insaan Ban Gayee Hai Kiran Mahtaab Ki
[A moon beam has assumed the human shape]
    Ab Kya Misaal Doon

Chehre Mein Ghul Gaya Hai Haseen Chandni Ka Noor
[the face has absorbed glow of beautiful moonlight]
Aankhon Mein Hai Chaman Ki Jawan Raat Ka Suroor
[The eyes brim with ecstacy of a night in the garden]
Gardan Hai Ek Jhuki *** Daali Daali Gulab Ki
[The neck is like a curved rose stem]
    Ab Kya Misaal Doon…

Gesu Khule To Shaam Ke Dil Se Dhuan Uthe
[when she opens her hair the heart of the jealous dusk smoulders]
Chhule Kadam To Jhukke Na Phir Aasman Uthe

Loverji, these are gems and classics, songs that immortalised Rafisaab, he has gone (as we all will someday) but he certainly has leave an indelible mark for fans throughout the world.

Others like Mohd Azeez, Vipin Sachdeva, Debashish Das Gupta, Bankin Pathak, Shabbir Kumar, and (likable) Sonu Nigam tried their best…………but then the Ustad is most notable…….Rafi will always be Rafi, we will always crave for his recordings.

Have these listed in the “Memories of Mohd Rafi” thread, with audio and translations for the enjoyment of all fans.

After so many long years in the Bollywood Film Industries; today he is no longer with us:

Another giant in the Bollywood Film Industries Passes On.

    Mumbai, (IANS)

Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the Bollywood doyen who mesmerised millions with Hindi films like “Guddi”, “Anand” and “Chupke Chupke”, died here Sunday following renal failure and heart complications, his family said. He was 83.

For the recipient of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the end came at 4.40 p.m. at the Lilavati Hospital here. The immediate cause for the death was septicaemia and chest infection along with kidney failure, hospital officials said.

Born in Kolkata on Sep 30, 1922, Mukherjee, or Hrishida as he was popularly called, leaves behind three daughters and a son. His granddaughters Tapur and Tupur Chatterjee are well-known models.

Mukherjee’s funeral is likely to be held Monday or Tuesday on the return of his son from the US.

The man who adopted a cocktail of simplicity and warmth to tell some of the best family dramas Bollywood ever saw had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hospital with kidney failure and other ailments in early June.

He started his career as an assistant director to veteran Bimal Roy in 1951 and it took him six years to direct his first film “Musafir” (1957) with Dilip Kumar.

The film bombed at the box office but caught Raj Kapoor’s attention who recommended Mukherjee as the director for “Anari”. This film was a huge commercial success and there was no looking back for the director after that.

The prolific director, who passed away after a prolonged illness, had by the end of his career taught generations how to make life fun-filled without losing virtuosity.

His common-man theme caught the audience’s fancy and his tragic – “Anand” – as well as light – “Chupke Chupke” – and tragicomic touch – “Mili” – made celluloid history.

Sadly, after “Khoobsoorat” his career saw a downslide despite brave attempts to salvage it with “Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaatein” (1999), starring Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla.

Apart from filmmaking, he served as the chairman of National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

His directorial ventures include “Sadma” (1983), “Khubsoorat” (1980), “Gol Maal” (1979), “Chupke Chupke” (1975), “Mili” (1975), “Namak Haraam” (1973), “Abhimaan” (1973), “Bawarchi” (1972), “Guddi” (1971), “Anand” (1970), “Anupama” (1966), “Anari” (1959) and “Musafir” (1957).

Also the writer of the screenplay for some of these films, he is known to have shaped the careers of several top actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Rekha, Jaya Bachchan and Amol Palekar.

Incidentally, he passed away on the 30th death anniversary of playback singer Mukesh who sang the famous song “Kahin door jab din dhal jaye’ in “Anand”, the film that made Mukherjee a living legend in his lifetime.

The touching message in “Anand” – that people die only to live on in the hearts of their near and dear ones – holds true for the film’s maker, too. Mukherjee is made immortal by the memories and the many moments of matinee magic he has left behind.

“Anand” was such a super film:

Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye
Somewhere far away, when the day ends
Sanjh Ki Dulhan Badan Churaye,Chupke Se Aaye

Did a couple of adjustments to the Lyrics, should now be in order for translations

If you don’t mind, here are a few adjustments. Please see if it matches what you hear.

bataa li(?) dil may teri yaad ansoo paunch liye,
rahe tu shaad, hamara hai kya jiye na jiye

    tara toote duniya dekhe
(dekha na kisee ne dil toot gayaa) 2

    jithne hi taare toote
    hogaa na kabhee andhiyaraa
    aasman par bahut hai taare
dil tha ek hamara, dil tha ek hamaraa
toot na jaaye kyon dil uskaa
    saathi jiskaa toot gayaa
dekha na kisee ne dil toot gayaa
    tara toote duniya dekhe …

chaand ko apna daav hai pyara
    chhupee hai koyi kahaanee
mai bhi chhupaaye huhn seene may
kisee ki ek nishaani, kisee ki ek nishaani
    kaise manaalun aansoo apni
    bhaag hi mujhse rooth gayaa
dekha na kisee ne dil toot gayaa
    tara toote duniya dekhe …

Uncle Som we can always depend on you to guide us rightly, appreciate this.

Your are correct as the very first word should be “Basa lee:”
The song has now been translated by a friend and it is only too fair to share such a beautiful heart wrenching, raw emotions Mukesh Selection:

Some minor changes in the lyrics …

Basa lee Dil May Tere Yaad
Instilled in my heart, your memory
Asoo poonch leyay Rahay tu shaad
wiped away my tears, may you be happy
Hamara hai kya jeyai na jeyai
Me, Its not important that I live, or not

    Tara Totay Duniya Dekhe
A star breaks and the world witnesses it
(Dekhaana kissine dil toot gaya )2
No one saw as the heart broke

Kitne bhi taray tootay ho gaana kabhi andhiyara
No matter how many stars break, it will not be dark
    Aasman par bahut hain taray
In the sky, many are the stars
Dil tha ek hamara, dil tha ek hamara
mine was just the one heart
Toot na jai quen dil usaka
How will this heart not break
    Saathi Jisaka chuut gaya
    He whose love was separated
    Dekhaana kisine dil toot gaya
No one saw as the heart broke

    Tara Totay Duniya Dekhe
A star breaks and the world witnesses it
(Dekhaana kissine dil toot gaya )2
No one saw as the heart broke

Chand ko apna daag hai pyara
The moon holds dear its blemish
    Chuupi hai koyee kahani
Some tale is hidden behind this
Mai Bhi Chupai hoon seenay may
I too have concealed in my bossom
Kisse ki ek nishaani Kisse ki ek nishaani
    someone’s keepsake
    Kaise Mana loon aanso apnay
    How to persuade my tears
    Baag hi Mujhasay roothe gaya
    Luck is estranged from me
    Dekhaana kissine dil toot gaya
No one saw as the heart broke

    Tara Totay Duniya Dekhe
A star breaks and the world witnesses it
(Dekhaana kissine dil toot gaya )2
No one saw as the heart broke
