It’s that time of the year again. The time to look back in retrospect. And also correct past mistakes by making new resolutions. Only to be broken again! If we look back at all the movies that were made, the promotion gimmicks that were used were quite unique. This year was clearly the year of unique selling tricks! So let’s look back and see which ones emerged as winners!

      1. Beep, Beep…MMS alert!

Many a Bollywood actors have been the victim of the dreaded MMS clip. Mallika Sherawat, Riya Sen, Preity Zinta, Shahid Kapoor, Manisha Koirala and Kareena Kapoor to name a few! A mere publicity stunt? We don’t know! But the one, which took the cake, was definitely the steamy Fardeen-Koena clip, deliberately circulated by the producers to promote Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena. In vain!

      2. Universal Declaration of the number of kisses in your film

Now this one has been done to death! Remember the 17 kisses in Khwahish that made Mallika Sherawat an overnight star? Or the package deal of a hot smooch and Emraan Hashmi in each of his films. And of course the recently released Neal N Nikki. 21 hot chicks and 21 kisses? Ya, right!

      3. Tu Tu Main Main!

This technique is simple enough. All that needs to be done is that reports of a tiff between actor-producer, actor-director or actor-actor have to be leaked out. Actually it does not matter who it is, as long as it is leaked! Cases in point: Pooja Bhatt announcing that her niece Smiley who was earlier in Holiday is a bad actress. Director Vivek Agnihotri getting miffed with Tanushree Dutta for giving more importance to Aashiq Banaya Aapne. Mahima Chaudhary’s high handed behavior with the producer of Souten. Sushmita Sen backing out of the promotions for Chingari due to her differences with the director. And the best one yet. Esha Deol slapping Amrita Rao on the sets of Pyare Mohan! Now that key question that needs to be addressed here is… Do we care?

      4. Chor Chor!

An author/screenplay writer/whoever blames the director/producer of a film for ‘lifting’ his story. What ensues is a battle of words between the two parties. If you are lucky, there might even be a court case. Some fine examples of this art Page 3, Iqbal, Pyaar Mein Twist, and the recent money spinner, Garam Masala wherein a playwright accused Priyadarshan of blatantly copying his play, when it was actually a remake a Priyadarshan’s own film Boeing Boeing! Whew!

      5. Cut!

Since times immemorial, we’re heard stories of how an actor has tried to cut short the length of his co-star’s role. This year was no different! The culprits include Akshay Kumar (for Shahid’s role in Deewana Huye Paagal) and Aishwarya Rai who had demanded that her role in The Rising be increased. She ultimately backed out of the project. Similarly Kunal Khemu was insecure when Emran Hashmi was roped in just for a cameo in Kalyug.

      6. Play the affair card!

If you’re not among the blessed few who can think of something hatke, and your imagination is about as dull as your script, fear not! For you can rely on the ever so dependable “affair” strategy. Just like Trick No.5, this one too has been in the business since decades and decades. A quick fix, most of the times it guarantees that your movie will be talked about. To refresh your memory, allow us to give you some examples! Abhishek and Rani in Bunty Aur Babli, Aditya Datt and Tanushree Dutta in Aashiq Banaya Aapne and most recently Emraan Hashmi and Celina Jaitley in Jawani Diwani.

In conclusion, we foresee pretty much the same antics in the coming year. And be sure that we will have another list ready before you know it! And for all you newsmakers, try something new!
