I love this song!
I'll try to translate, but It's not going to be too great because this song has a lot references to things the singers are reminiscing about, and so it sounds really weird in english. But it makes sense in urdu/hindi. Basically, this song is being sung by different soldiers who are receiving letters from their loved ones (mother/friends/wife/fiance). And they sing about how their wife or mother sends them letters and asks them when they will be coming home. Along with people, they also sing about how their village, or the streets in the village, also ask them when they will come home. Basically, they sing about all of the things they miss about home. Kind of like the Pilssbury commercial, “Home is calling.” lol Anyway, If something doesn't make sense, just ask and I'll try to explain it better if I can…
Ohh Ohh Ohh Ohhhh …
Sandese aate hai.n
Letters come
Hume tadpate hai.n
They (the letters) torture me
Vo chitti aati hai.n
That letter comes
Vo pooche jaati hai.n
It (the letter) continues to ask
Ke ghar kab aao ge — (2)
When are you going to come home?
Likho kab aao ge
Write (in your letter to me) when you are going to come
Ki tum bin yeh ghar suna suna hai
Because without you, this house is empty, empty
Sandese aate hai.n
Hume tadpate hai.n
Vo chitti aati hai.n
Vo pooche jaati hai.n
Ke ghar kab aao ge — (2)
Likho kab aao ge
Ki tum bin yeh ghar suna suna hai
Kisi dilwali ne, kisi matwali ne
Some bighearted, mischievous girl… (Dilwali – girl with a heart-Bighearted, compassionate. Matwali- don't know what this means exactly but I'm guessing it has something to do with mischief…)
Hume khat likkha hai
has written me a letter
Ke humse pucha hai
and has asked me
Kisi ki saaso.n ne, kisi ki dhadkan ne
Someone's breaths, someone's heartbeat
Kisi ki chudi ne, kisi ke kangan ne
Someone's bracelet, someone's bangle
Kisi ke cajre ne, kisi ke gajre ne
Someone's kohl (eye liner), someone's gajra (see picture at end)
Mahekti subhoh ne, machalti shaamo.n ne
The scented mornings, the riotous evenings
Akeli raato.n ne, adhuri baato.n ne
The lonely nights, the incomplete conversations
Tarasti baaho.n ne
The yearning arms
Aur pucha hai tarasi nighaho.n ne
And the yearning gaze has asked
Ke ghar kab aao ge — (2)
When are you coming home?
Likho kab aao ge
Ki tum bin yeh dil suna suna hai
Because without you, this heart is empty, empty
Sandese aate hai.n
Hume tadpate hai.n
Vo chitti aati hai.n
Vo pooche jaati hai.n
Ke ghar kab aao ge — (2)
Likho kab aao ge
Ki tum bin yeh ghar suna suna hai
Mahobbat walo.n, ne hamare yaaro.n ne
The lovers, our friends
Hume yeh likha hai, ke humse poocha hai
Have written this to us, and have asked us
Hamare gaao.n ne, aam ki chaao.n ne
Our villages, the shades of the mango (tree)
Purane pipple ne, baraste baadal ne
The old peepal (tree), the showering clouds</stron
