Does anyone have the lyrics and translation to this song by Manna Dey?
I think this song is in Bengali so you probably will not have much luck finding the lyrics or translations here. I do know Bengali and I may be able to translate the song but I am not familiar with this song and can not provide the translation without the lyrics. Do you know where this song can be heard on line?
Madhu
Yes, it is a Bengali song. I would appreciate it more than anything if you could translate this to english, with the bengali words included. Here is a link – I hope it works – you may have to manually type it in the address bar:
So I have been trying to write out what I am hearing while listening to this song – Since I don’t know the language, it may be impossible for anyone to decipher what I have written. If anyone who knows Bengali can look through what I have and recognize what it means, please put the proper words, with an english translation. It would be extremely appreciated!!!!
Amar ek dike shudu tumi
shudu tume amar ek dike shudu tumi
priti bi ee oh no dike
e dike ek ti pro deep

ami tomari dik tanilam
ai ta ray tu porta cho pero dyon

toe bo ni de pa bena

I think this site plays only a sample of the song unless you register and download the song because I am able to play only the opening lines of the song. I found it on Hamara CD also but even there you can play only the first few lines. You are obviously hearing the whole thing since you wrote all the lyrics. I tried to translate based on what you wrote but unfortunately while I can pick out a few words here and there I can not pick out enough to make sense of the song. It is hard enough to know what is being sung when things are typed perfectly since the words are written differently than they sound. In this case it is even harder since you are writing what you think you hear even though that may not be a Bengali word. If you can send the mp3 to me as an attachment to an e-mail I will see what I can do. In the meantime here are the beginning lines of your song.
Aamaar ak dike shudhu tumi, shudhu tumi, amar ek dike shudhu tumi
on one side of me is just you, just you, on one side of me is just you
prithibi onno dike
the earth is on the other side
e dike ek ti prodeep shurjo ta o dike
on this side there is just one earthen lamp, the sun is on that side
aami tomarii deep taa nilaam
I took your earthen lamp

I am not sure how to convert my recording to mp3 – But I do know that this song is available on itunes if you do a search for the artist “manna de”
I must have really thrashed the Bengali language trying to write down what I think I’m hearing – I wish I could understand it!
Aamaar ak dike shudhu tumi, shudhu tumi, aamaar ek dike shudhu tumi
on one side of me is just you, just you, on one side of me is just you
prithibi onno dike
the earth is on the other side
ai dike ek ti prodeep, shurjo taa o dike
on this side there is just one lamp, the sun is on that side
aami tomarii deep taa nilaam
I chose to take your lamp
aami tomaarii deep taa nilaam
I chose to take your lamp
ai dhaare dukho taa chokher o jol
on this side there are tears of sorrow in the eyes
o dhaaray okhon shaagore otol
on that side there is a fathomless ocean of happiness
toboo shomudra cheray
still leaving that ocean
chokher ai jol taa bookay dhoray ami nilaam
I have taken the tears from your eyes into my heart
ami tomari dip taa nilaam
I chose to take your lamp
ai khaanay kantalo tai ek ti phooler dolaa
over here there is a flower in the midst of thorns
ai khaanay kantalo tai ek ti phooler dolaa
over here there is a flower in the midst of thorns
okhanay boshonto haazaar phoolar mela
over there is spring and thousands of flowers blooming
ai khaanay kantalo tai ek ti phooler dolaa
over here there is a flower in the midst of thorns
ai paashay shonka chintaar deen
on this side there are days of suspicion and worries
oh paashey shomoy bhaabanaaa biheen
on that side there is time without worries
toboo nir bhaabanaar shanti ke chere
but still I have left the worryless times and peace
oshanti nite elam
I have come to take chaos
aami tomari dip ta nilaam
I chose to take your lamp
aami tomari dip taa nilaam
I chose to take your lamp
aami tomari dip taa nilaam
I chose to take your lamp
Madhu
Thank you so much!!!!!! I really appreciate you taking the time to do this
